What is n8n?
n8n is an open-source workflow automation platform that you can self-host — giving you full control over your data and infrastructure.
The short version
n8n (pronounced 'nodemation') is a workflow automation tool similar to Zapier and Make, but with one major difference: you can run it on your own server. No data leaves your infrastructure, no per-task pricing, and you can write custom JavaScript in every node.
How n8n works
You build workflows visually by connecting nodes — each node represents a tool or action. n8n has 400+ built-in integrations, and you can add custom HTTP requests for anything else. Workflows trigger on schedules, webhooks, or manual runs.
n8n vs Zapier vs Make
Zapier is the easiest to start with but the most expensive at scale. Make is the visual sweet spot for most businesses. n8n is what you use when you need self-hosting for compliance, want zero per-task pricing at high volume, or have a developer on the team. For most small businesses, Make is the right default.
When we use n8n at 2pizza.team
We build on n8n for clients who handle sensitive data (GDPR-regulated industries, healthcare, legal), for high-volume data processing where per-task costs would add up, and for clients who want full ownership of their automation infrastructure without ongoing SaaS costs.
n8n pricing
Self-hosted n8n is free and open-source. n8n Cloud starts at $20/month for 2,500 workflow executions. Self-hosting costs whatever your server costs — typically $5-20/month on a basic VPS for most business workflows.
We build automation systems for small teams. Free audit call to map your specific workflows - no pitch, just a plan.
